Summer Camp 2014 Marin Sierra, CA

Camp Marin Sierra Camp Marin Sierra is located in the heart of the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains, just west of Lake Tahoe. In just a few short months we will be heading out for a week at camp. This year marks our troop’s second visit to the camp.

Camp Marin Sierra
(Emigrant Gap, California)
Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 13

Some of the scouts said Camp Marin Sierra was the best camp they've ever been to so far.

The train ride through the Rockies and across the western United States was extremely memorable, and the activities the scouts were able to participate in were unsurpassed!

Summer Camp 2013 Camp Alexander

Camp Alexander is located in the beautiful Elevenmile Canyon in the Pike National Forest approximately 45 miles west of Colorado Springs, and two miles south of Lake George, in Park County, Colorado.

Camp Alexander is between 8200 and 8600 feet elevation. The camp area consists of hills, low mountains, and valleys covered by a mix of Ponderosa pine forests, high-altitude grasslands, and wetland vegetation along the lake and stream.

There is abundant wildlife including black bears, raccoons, skunks, rabbits, squirrels, deer, elk, coyotes, snakes, and bald eagles.

What happened in Summer Camp 2012

This year's Summer Camp destination was FLORIDA SEABASE, May 30- June 6. (week #1)

A 40- to 50-foot sailing yacht will be our home for a week. It has a large self-contained galley and dining area where we will prepare wholesome meals from the fresh or canned foods supplied by Sea Base, supplemented by fresh catches from trolling while underway.

The captain will instruct us in navigation, fishing and sailing, and will remain on board for the entire trip. We choose our own float plan to explore the beautiful Florida Keys. This trip offers one-of-a-kind snorkeling and abundant fishing. We'll spend a "port day" back at Sea Base and have the chance to demonstrate our sailing skills in their fleet of Hunter Sailboats. This is a seven day event.

2012 Summer Camp

The younger scouts with Troop 278 will be attending CAMP BUFFALO BILL, July 15 through July 21.

Camp Buffalo Bill is operated by the The Central Wyoming Council of the Boy Scouts of America and provides year-round, residential camp programing for scouts of all ages, including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers. Buffalo Bill is also the home of the Yellowstone High Adventure Outpost, which provides first-class high adventure experiences throughout the Greater Yellowstone Area.

Located in the incredible Wapiti Valley between the North Absaroka and Washakie Wilderness areas, Camp Buffalo Bill is just seven miles east of ?Yellowstone National Park provides a setting where beauty, wildlife and adventure abound. This was the playground for William “Buffalo Bill” Cody and now it’s ours. We are busy preparing the camp for your arrival.

Summer Camp 2012 Was AWESOME!

It was a great camp and the scouts had fun. This page will remain available for awhile so that prospective scouts can see how Troop 278 plans and prepares for summer camp.

Scout success stories
Four boys earned their WILDERNESS SURVIVAL merit badge at Summer Camp 2012 with some added excitment of a bear in camp.  That skill will be with them for life!

More than 37 merit badges were earned at Summer Camp by the Scouts of Troop 278. It's a great place for the boys to get the full Scouting experience.

The food was really good!  The camp did a great job of balancing the nutrition of the meals.

Adults were also active in bringing the boys along with merit badges and advancement.

We had 22 scouts earn their polar bear badge.  We had temperatures of 50 degrees on Monday to a low of 38 degrees on Wednesday.  We have some very brave scouts!

Troop 278 was part of the closing campfire and put on one of the funniest skits you will ever see.

Scout success stories
Two boys earned their WILDERNESS SURVIVAL merit badge at Summer Camp 2011. That skill will be with them for life!
Four other boys passed their Board of Review at camp and were promoted.
  • Two are now Scout
  • One is now Second Class
  • One was promoted to Star
More than 100 merit badges were earned at Summer Camp by the Scouts of Troop 278. It's a great place for the boys to get the full Scouting experience.

It is also a great place for adults to come up to speed on Scouting. Mr. Beck was re-certified as a BSA Lifeguard. The course was 40 hours with a test at the end. BDSR was no vacation for Mr. Jack!

Adults were also active in bringing the boys along with merit badges and advancement. Some of our adults even participated in the merit badge courses to bring real life experience to the class. For example, Mr. Wilson brought his own truck to automotive merit badge, then showed the boys how different parts of the truck worked.
